Dream House, a 501(c) 3 organization incorporated in 2001, was created to address the special life care needs of children who, because or an accident, illness, congenital disorder, abuse or neglect, has been left in a stable condition but dependent on life sustaining medications, treatments, equipment and the need for assistance with activities of daily living. These children with special health care needs are often abandoned or taken away from their families when appropriate care cannot be provided. When placed in state custody, they spend many months and years moving from foster home to hospital to senior adult nursing homes, because Georgia has no organized program in place to meet the special needs of these children or the families that care for them. This situation further deteriorates the physical, mental and emotional health of these already fragile children, creating an even greater health care need. Families can be destroyed, children are at greater risk for fatal outcomes and millions of healthcare dollars are wasted.
Advances in medical technology are keeping many babies alive when just a decade ago, they would not have lived through a premature delivery, a birth defect or other trauma. Sadly, a system to support that child, who because of medical intervention is destined to live a life dependent upon constant medical care, is practically non-existent. Many families cannot absorb the added responsibilities and pressure to take care of the child and hurt or neglect them. These children have had their lives saved, but only to live in some of the worst circumstances we can fathom. They are left to languish in hospitals, nursing homes and institutions, without a family to nurture them. And this costs the community at-large millions of dollars each year.
Dream House for Medically Fragile Children offers a solution. By generating new and unique ideas and programs, forming creative partnerships, utilizing existing resources in new and creative modes, there can be a tremendously positive impact in the quality of life for our children, our families, and our communities. Dream House for Medically Fragile Children, Inc. seeks to provide the quality of life these special children deserve by providing them with a home, a family and a future. The impact will be significant: improved physical, mental and emotional health, less need for healthcare provider interventions, reduced healthcare costs, increased productivity and quality of life, less burden on local and state resources and money saved by governmental and health care organizations.
